Color Theory Basics for Choosing Outfits

Beauty analysis card with a color palette for wardrobe styling

You don't need a design degree to combine colors well — three simple color-wheel relationships cover most outfits that look intentionally put together.

Monochrome

Different shades and tones of the same color (like navy, sky blue and denim) create a cohesive look that reads as effortless and is nearly impossible to get wrong.

Analogous

Colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel — like blue, teal and green — pair naturally because they share an underlying tone.

Complementary

Colors opposite each other on the wheel, like navy and rust, or olive and burgundy, create contrast that feels deliberate rather than clashing, especially when one color is used as the dominant piece and the other as an accent.

Is it ever okay to just wear all black?

Yes — an all-neutral outfit isn't a color theory failure, it's simply the monochrome approach at its most minimal, and it works for a reason.
